Abandoned houses...

Have you ever driven pass an abandoned house, and thought to yourself, how did that happen? Like, when a piece of property ends up messed up, where did everything go wrong? Did the owners just stop caring, stop paying the bills, cutting the grass, cleaning up? Did they just leave? At what point is the decision made to vacate the premises? Did they exit by choice? Were they forced out? Were they overwhelmed and just couldn't take it anymore? Was the evacuation the result of some outside factors? Did they simply dislike or hate the house?

Now if you have been following me, I'm guessing by now you can kind of predict where I may be going with this analogy...

Let's compare the concept of the abandoned house to ourselves... Have you ever felt like you just checked out? Don't care? So down, that you begin to stop tending to both the inside and the outside of yourself? Letting things go for longer periods of time than you should? What you used to do every week, you now do every few months? The responsibilities that use to be the most important to you have now completely fallen off of the list of priorities altogether? Those good habits that used to help make everything run smoothly are now just passing thoughts...

When did you make the decision to to abandon your mental, spiritual, or even physical, houses?

The thing about abandoning a literal house, is that before it begins to actually cave in on you, you can make the choice to vacate the premises... You can go somewhere new, somewhere fresh, somewhere clean, somewhere empty... You fill the space with everything you have that's good and in its best condition... You start over...

If only it were that easy when we are talking about our figurative houses... those mind, body and soul places where we reside, or rather, that reside in us... If only we could vacate the premises! Find a new mind, a new body, and a new spirit... But it isn't that simple...Wherever we go we take our same mind, we walk with our same body, and we continue to move through the power of the same spirit... no matter how overwhelmed we are, no matter how sick we get of life's messes, and no matter how tired we can be of ourselves, we can never truly vacate the premises...

Are you walking around in an abandoned house? Have you given up on yourself? Have you condemned your existence and told yourself that what's left is in-salvageable? News flash: YOU CANNOT VACATE THE PREMISES!!!... so you might as well, GO HOME!!!

Abandonment takes place gradually in most instances... it doesn't necessarily happen overnight... It progresses over time...it begins with not having time to mow the lawn... choosing to not clean the windows... deciding not to do laundry every 2 weeks instead of every week... deciding to clean the bathrooms once a month instead of everyday...forgetting about taking out the garbage... then, as things pile high, it manifests as simply choosing to do certain things on a consistent schedule of NEVER!

In the physical, abandonment takes form gradually as well... seems a little vain, but with us girls, eyebrows go unarched, mustaches go unwaxed, hair goes unwashed... when we used to wear heels, we now wear flats... and where we used to wear flats...we now wear slippers... we replace exercise with naps...the excitement that comes with getting dressed, smelling nice, feeling good about your appearance --- essentially vanishes...

In the mental and spiritual, abandonment is a process as well... and oh, the process of trying to undo it --- can be neverending... it begins with emotions and thoughts... it escalates into negative and hurtful beliefs about one's own existence... the abandonment is then perpetuated by self-hate... true abandonment sets in as a feeling of numbness... you can take things or leave them... all cried out... no more tears...no more energy...no more fight... no more hate... no more love...

No more feeling... just numb...

Declare your abandoned house officially OCCUPIED!!! NO VACANCIES!!! Do not continue to roam in an abandoned house... Where you have been drained mentally, stimulate positive thinking, speak encouraging daily affirmations, read more, write more, smile more, do more... In the physical, pick back up some of those old good habits... get those nails groomed, brush those edges, lotion those legs and feet honey!!! lol And make a decision to wear something nice for a day...not my idea of nice --- your idea of nice...replace a nap with a walk... just make a decision to care...

And finally, spiritually (I address the spirit last, but it should be what's tended to first...), where you've been brought down to your lowest of low points, rise in prayer... gain wisdom through reading God's Word... accept peace through His Spirit... meditate on his love... grow in His grace... be grateful and thankful for all blessings and privileges... forgive others... forgive yourself...magnify love...

If your "house" is abandoned, make the decision to go home, tend to the lawn, tighten up that curb appeal, clean the dust and cobwebs out of the corners...find the mops, brooms and dust pans... be sure to have enough garbage bags on deck.... AND GET IT TOGETHER!!!
